“Velsheda, superyacht, on charter” – Extra Info

"Velsheda, superyacht, on charter" Sailing on a superyacht of the J class is an experience you will never forget!

Velsheda, a restored giant “J class” not to be confused with the very successful J class of 26′ one design yachts designed in the U.S.A.

Velsheda was built by Camper and Nicholson in the 1930’s.
Velsheda’s single piece mast is almost 200′ high.
It took 19 men to hoist her 2 ton mainsail and after we knew we’d had some exercise.

Velsheda had in her youth raced the King’s Royal Yacht “Britannia” and many other famous superyachts although at that time the term superyacht had not been coined.

Amusing and impressive stories of Velsheda abound, she has become a living legend never to be forgotten by any who are lucky enough to sail on her.

Velsheda was for many years a familiar sight around the Solent, chartered annually for Cowes Week by CPC (United Kingdom) Limited (name changed in 1998 to Best Foods Inc), the leading food manufacturer with 7 royal warrants.

Velsheda’s task was to give hospitality and a unique sailing experience to people who had been helpful to CPC (United Kingdom) Limited / Best Foods Inc.

A result of Gordon Frickers painting was an offer from the delighted Tony Cox to sail with them the next year for four days.

Unusual yacht, food company, good location, what would you choose to do?

Velsheda was easy to find in a mooring.
Her mast was literally twice the height of any of the others!
She was also the only Yacht Gordon Frickers has sailed on that needed a tug (not having her own engine and drawing 19 feet of water) to enter and leave port.
