Care of your painting or print and framing :

Framing, prefer to do it your self, the following may be helpful.

You have or want a good picture and you want to frame, to “get it right”?

~

Choosing a picture frame: We recommend you discuss the following with your framer, that your frame does not dominate the picture, is sympathetic to the owner’s temperament and the room it will be hung in. Paintings and prints should produce a special ambiance making a statement.

Some guidelines include:

  1. Never frame directly on glass. Consult an experienced picture framer. Demand conservation quality framing.

  2. Always have clean hands so no traces of skin oil touch your painting / print to breed stains. Ensure there is no risk of creasing or edges crimped, use two hands to lift the picture.

  3. Never touch or drag anything across the image area, if you leave a thumb- print or scratch the surface, you will leave a permanent mark that cannot be repaired.

  4. Picture framers tend to be more interested in the frame than the picture. A natural mistake, watch out for this. It will devalue your picture. They use frames which over power the picture; not good. The frame should be discreet.

  5. The latest fashions are clean simple mouldings This suits almost all periods of room.

  6. Frame tone and colour should not over power the picture or the room. To be sophisticated, steer well clear of very narrow or highly original frames.

  7. Avoid frames that are narrow or very dark; they generally look and are miserly. 2” to 2.5″ ( 62 mm) works well for pictures up to about 20″ x 32″ (50 x 81 cm) then add on about 1 ” (2,4 cm) per foot (30 cm).

  8. Make sure you check there is no dampness on any wall where you are hanging our print. Humidity is a major enemy to paper and prints.

Card mounting :

A card mount, it should echo the main theme colours of the picture and often but not always be white, near white or of a significantly softer tone and saturation.

Dry mounting Canvas prints :

Hot Mounting & Over-Laminating Hot Press, Hot Glass Vacuum Press

Unimount DMT75 Classic Premium Dry Mount Tissue

The Hot Glass Press is ideal for all hot dry mounting heat seal over-laminating and canvas bonding in your workshop.

Foam Blankets :

Foam is used in heated presses for two reasons: The majority of boards are made up of pulp, and has tiny hills across the surface.
The pressure of a hard plate may shine the peaks.
Foam laid over helps even out the pressure and minimise this effect.

Secondly, it presses the laminating film down into the weave of the canvas to give the canvas texture look.
Foam can also leave its own texture impression in Gloss and Satin films.

The ‘Hot Glass Press’ offers many benefits to the user:

  • an under-surface which is completely flat and smooth
  • errors such as mis-alignment and fold back are easily spotted and corrected
  • stray adhesive can readily be seen and cleaned off the under-surface
  • even and controllable heat.

HOT PRESS

This system is a method for seamlessly attaching our “Heritage” canvas prints (see “Print gallery“) to a backing board prior to mounting and framing.
