In Mr. W J M Turner’s [wet] footsteps.
This remarkable marine painting was composed from sketches and photographs by a direct method the illustrious Mr. W J M Turner would have approved.
This particular marine painting is suffering like me, from domestic disruption over the past 20 years so I’ve a little ‘restoration’ to do; that is, to the painting.
The sketches and photographs [which I still have] from which this marine painting was created were made from the heavily pitching fore deck of a 45 foot press launch provided by sponsors Champagne Mumm.
There are echos of several ‘Turner legends here.
Turner’s “Rain Steam and Speed” and his “Steamer in a Snow Storm Making Distress Signals” to name but two of his famous paintings were produced with similar elan.
My series of these unusual paintings literally flowed from a spray soaked tossing and very wet deck.
Corum sponsored the winning French Team and their elegant Corum Saphire won the Fastnet race that year.
On of those yacht race paintings which are alas not shown on this web site, one was bought by Corum [Switzerland] for their HQ.
Kindly remind me to make sure this yarn and the ‘Corum Saphire’ appear in the book I’ve been asked to write.
