Nelson & Racehorse

Nelson’s Arctic Voyage was one of the formative events in Nelson’s life.

The commander’s leadership greatly influenced Nelson and another young man who went on to become one of the founders of the U S Navy.

Who was this Admiral Horatio Nelson, how was his character moulded?

Is Nelson a role model for today’s youth?

There are many clues in this text.

One of my ‘Nelson and Trafalgar’ paintings, a series yet to be exhibited in public.

A very special painting explained in my text “HM Sloop Racehorse, North Sea storm, Arctic expedition 1773”, “Nelson’s Arctic Voyage”.

This moment :

is taken directly from the ship’s log book, full titled by Peter Goodwin, author of “Nelson’s Arctic Voyage”.
“HM Sloop Racehorse, North Sea storm, Arctic expedition 1773”.
The painting subtitle is written in the ship’s log book with notable sange froid, “Put Preventer Gammoning upon the Bowsprit”, Friday 17 September 1773.
This dangerous, difficult task seen here performed of necessity in a North Sea autumnal storm is usually considered a dockyard job.

‘The Nelson and Trafalgar’ series, a series yet to be exhibited in public and a painting for the new book ‘Nelson’s Arctic Voyage’ by Peter Goodwin ISBN 978-1-4729-5417-6.

A painting as interpreted from the log book of the day of Racehorse, and from Admiralty drawings, a ‘Nelson’ painting closely supervised by the legendary authority Peter Goodwin with further advice from Captain Frank Scott, square rig master, grandson of “Scott of the Antarctic”.

Young Nelson
Peter Goodwin, Gordon Frickers, HM Sloop Racehorse

Peter Goodwin, naval author exceptional :

is the former ‘Keeper and Curator, HMS Victory‘ and author of 17 naval books.

He wrote “This is unbelievably impressive; I can feel the gratings in the ship’s head dropping from under my feet as the ship lunges into another trough of sea and temporarily unbalanced my legs anticipate the next lurch as I struggle with the other men as they ‘put a preventer gammoning on the bowsprit“.

Painting :

is our salute to Nelson and the men and an insight into shipboard work in a severe gale, pre ‘Health and Safety’ rules…
My Racehorse was produced in cooperation with the distinguished naval author Peter Goodwin for his new book “Nelson’s Arctic Voyage” and published by Bloomsbury,  May 2019.
