This Painting :
You recognise the background?
A Union Castle Line regular port of call, Cape Town is instantly recognisable to anyone who knows Table Mountain.
This splendid Union Castle Line ship represents well the classic age of steamers and is a rare example of a ‘Frickers’ watercolour.
Most of the Union Castle fleet were named after British castles.
They were by standards of those times, good, comfortable, solid and seaworthy ships that were well manned, Castle line ships, we shall not see their like again…
Llangibby Castle :
was a passenger liner, she was operated between 1929 to 1954.
‘Llangibby Castle‘ was named after the castle at Llangybi also known as Tregrug Castle, in Monmouthshire. The ship, an advanced design in her day, was constructed by Harland and Wolff, at their shipyard in Govan, Glasgow.
