Historical background, ship and castle
I researched much assisted by a great Plymouth citizen the late Bob Brennan, on and off from 1998 to produce this painting.
We reconstructed the port based on period documents including contemporary maps some of which were drawn by French and Spanish spies.
The maps clearly show the castle and other the town defences were manned at that period.
Demolished later in the 17th century, the castle is still represented on the Plymouth city coat of arms and a few parts of the castle can still be seen just south of The Barbican area of Plymouth.
The maps also show in detail the entrance to Sutton Harbour, as reconstructed in my painting.
I have based my Mayflower upon a model I built of the 1957 replica designed by William Baker, built at Dartmouth, Devon, sailed to America and generously gifted to the citizens of the United States of America.

Mayflower, the making of a painting

By comparing the early stage of this painting with the sketch below you can see for yourself how the drawing is evolving, scale, composition and other factors.
How many changes can you spot ?!

What did the Mayflower and Plymouth in 1620 really, I mean really look like?
1620? a new nation, a long story although the painting’s story really began in 1998.
Modeling Mayflower
I bought a model of The Mayflower and “The Mayflower And Other Colonial Vessels” by W A Baker [ISBN : 0 85177 286 2], the man who designed the successful 1957 Mayflower replica.

We know the #Mayflower sailed from #Plymouth to immortality, to found the colony that has become the super power, the United States of America.
An elite committee of far sighted Plymouthians
approached me in 2015 with a proposal, in part because I’ve lived in Plymouth for over 25 years.
They had in mind a series of large paintings to be VIP gifts during Mayflower400 in 2020.
Aided ably by fellow Plymouthian, the late Bob Brennan, I began detailed research and produced a series of basic concept sketches.
2018
Plymouth city and central government bureaucracy involved.
Showing an initial enthusiasm, it was not long before other vested interests used bureaucratic bungling to killed our project.
It seems a waste not to use the insights we illuminated from our valuable research hence the new painting.
Any one of the first group of concept sketches, two shown here, could be developed into an impressive painting.
