Ship art for professionals: Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd known locally as Calmac commissioned this painting and two other paintings of ‘Clansman’.
This picture was ordered by the managing director of Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd as the first of a series which included ‘Loch Nevis‘ and ‘Hebrides‘.
Calmac had a new ferry building at the Appledore Shipyard, N. Devon for the Western Isles, The Outer Hebrides in particular for Barra.
Calmac required 3 paintings suitable to present to Royalty.
They were confident I had plenty of experience of this sort of work so specifications and budget were quickly sorted, contract agree and visits to the design office (Glasgow) and to Barra.
Clansman naming, ‘Royal’ Invitation
After the ship naming I was presented to the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, a 15 minute conversation about paintings and the Hebridean islands ensued..
Today you can view “Clansman departing Castle Bay, Barra” onboard ship in the main saloon of Clansman, or collect a beautiful signed copy here.
