Last Departure from Falmouth lead directly to this ship being saved for posterity (us all) by Captain and Mrs Dowman. Today we know her by her original name, Cutty Sark.

Last Departure being exhibited at the request of Cutty Sark’s then Captain, Simon Waite.

The old ship “Ferreira” was owned by the Portuguese  for 27 years and they were very proud of her

Ferreira” departed Falmouth with an ignominious cargo of scrap iron.

Captain Waite was previously a Captain of the British India Steam Navigation Company.  As a master mariner Captain Waite was quick to read the sea pattern, saying I’d got the waves just right for the currents around Falmouth.

He said to me “Unfortunately the trustees saw and refused to buy this splendid painting so have missed their opportunity”.

I have a long association with “Cutty Sark” first visiting with a school outing when aged about 7.

Years later I took my children onboard the  Cutty Sark.
