Anti dote to snow?

Snow, fine for a walk better still to return to a log fire, hot tea and home made scones… Most unusually for this part of the world it’s already – 2 outside this evening. Usually here at Théhillac we consider 10 C quite chilly; a Gulf Stream thing… It seems just about everywhere has snow, … Read more

Climate Change? > is the best reason I know for North Europeans to move South.

I’m prompted to write by an article in the Sydney Morning Post, a journal who’s archives I’ve refereed to when researching “Emigration, Plymouth Cattewater” (this splendid original painting is available, measures 76 x 121 cms (30″ x 48″) and is also available as a signed, numbered Marine Print on canvas for the look and feel of the real thing.

Last night the temperature at the North Pole was 0 while most of Europe shivered in minus 5 to minus 25…

‘Last Night’

Started 2 years ago, coupled with good light and inspiration, this work of art has eased me into 2018 paintings.

The symbolism and abstraction qualities expressed in this painting, eternal love, hope and faith, will bring good fortune, kindness and wise judgement to those seeking spiritual truth and emotional security.

Harp, a Pickle secret?

Plus we have a call for volunteers to work on “Iris Mary” and “Irene”, at Saltash, February 17 -22?

Ieuan was overwhelmed when he saw what was done at Christmas. We shed a few tears together….Even hardy sailors get emotional” Talfryn Laposte wrote to me.

St Valentine’s Day & Pirates

Pirates, St Valentine’s day, Shrove Tuesday?

A question from my old shipmate Chris Fagg, a question of importance for pirates and likewise for Christians.

We start with ‘Shrove’, a form of the English word shrive, past tense of shrive a verb, Shrove, shrived, shriven, generally associated with penance; something pirates are not notably good at.

Meanwhile here is painting of mine, “The Last Buccaneer” long since sold, for you to ponder.

This ship was also called by the Chinese, “The Great Pirate” and yet she was Christian and a Royal Navy 64 gun ship of the line, HMS Centurion, my painting being based on the superb model in the National Maritime Museum Collection at Greenwich, London…

The yarn gets better… It’s all mungled up with the Roman Catholic, Orthodox and some other Christians, ideas about ‘Lent’.

Lent being another word pirates have unconventional views upon..

My first ‘recorded’ efforts to paint

An amusing tale in answer to a point raised by my friend Gerri Gill, via Facebook, Gerri won’t mind my sharing this with you.
Of yesterdays post Gerri generously wrote “Absolutely gorgeous. I love them both and especially the top colours [Mauretania, Maiden Departure from Liverpool, available as a signed print] . One is calm and serene. The other makes you sit up to attention and look …..

Mauritania, Maiden Departure

Then the key part, she wrote “I am right in thinking that your path to excellence started with Francis? He must feel very proud“.

My reply was along these lines…
The path didn’t start with Francis Pratt although he was a major influence.
Probably my first ‘recorded’ efforts to paint were when I was about 4 or 5 years old.

Gordon age 3

With my friend Patrick Crawley we opened some tins of paint in my parents garage then ‘abstract painted’ the walls.
Very firmly told never do that again, I next painted Patrick.
Poor wee lad, he had to have his cloths burnt and head shaved so I must have done a pretty job.
I don’t actually remember doing it but my Mother sometimes told the story and I do remember seeing the garage walls, thinking it was very jolly and wondering how it came to be so.

The Deadly Trade

A sea, a sky, a black stick; there is more to painting submarines than that. I think having a ‘feel’ for one’s subject is very important.  I have the utmost respect for sub mariners. Shown here, HMS Unique, “Moonlight Patrol”, https://www.frickers.co.uk/art/marine-art/war-ships/moonlight-patrol/ : her fate remains a mystery…  “The Deadly Trade” by my friend and colleague the … Read more

Image sizes

I was asked today by a friend who is helping re write much of the text on this web site (you will see the changes, beginning later this month) about image size and copyright.

‘The Corsair’, copyright in action, the book published in Arabic and in English by Bloomsbury, became a best seller.

Re size, This is a whole other set of rigging and spars upon which to hang sales. … I have a ‘policy’. I’m not worried about people copying.

Copying is another subject, one I’ve researched and given much thought to.
