“Dumra” for Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

Following the thread of  my  current ongoing work with “B I Sunday“I found myself updating this page “Dumra, departing Bombay” and the associated ‘Further reading’ page “Dumra, British India Steam Navigation Company, departing Bombay – Extra Info” have been revised and updated, enjoy

To compose a painting

“B I Sunday” can be seen developing here. Two sketches are attached, 7 and 8 b. They represent a lot a combined effort, of thought, analysis, some detective work and insight.

Swahili has a saying; haraka haraka haina baraka. In English meaning ‘hurry hurry has no blessing’. The phrase is an apt one for this painting.

This complex painting celebrates an event probably unique in merchant marine history when every wharf in the substantial port of Kilindini, Mombasa was occupied by ships of the same company.

Oh buoy… mystery object washed ashore

Good will to all mankind … the Christmas spirit and plastic in our food chain?

I am saddened to learn via this article (thanks to The West Briton) that the amount of plastic discarded in our seas and oceans continues to increase.

Dumping at sea is unsightly, unhygienic and sometimes poisonous.  The waste is injurious to sea life, turtles, dolphins and many other species including us.

Frigate Hermione on TV

The frigate Hermione; my good friend Valérie Lambert very kindly wrote to me today “Watch Thalassa this Friday channel France 3 at 8:45 pm …featuring the Hermione”.
A little about Hermione follows below but first for our French friends

Je peignais une image “Hermione” tout récemment, que, suite à une visite remarquable à la cour de navire où la réplique a été construite.

A rotting schooner… rises?

Rhoda Mary, a rotting schooner… good ships as with good stories are rarely forgotten, nor their men.

Rhoda Mary
Rhoda Mary
You can’t hold a good story down, here is one I’ve mentioned before and is developing.

It begins to look as if the rotting remains of the elegant “Rhoda Mary” presently slowly reverting to nature in the mud of the river Medway will rise and return to the lands of the living, maybe the open sea too.

The Tavistock Inn…

A salty yarn, two beautiful vessels and the Tavistock Inn on Dartmoor…

As with ‘old’ friends it is always a pleasure to hear from previous clients. I have been very fortunate in that many of my clients and colleagues have become friends. Even more so when one owns a pub on Dartmoor to which I was invited, the Tavistock Inn.
Richard Brenton wrote to me recently, by post as in snail mail, with a question.

Schooner "Jane Banks" entering Bermuda.
