The ‘Spirit of Mystery’ painting is 98 % completed.  SoM_01.12.12_IMG_4874_wp.JPG

Here at a distinctly cold Castelnau de Montmiral, our first snow flakes of the new winter arrived today.

Attached is the result of the last 2 days effort.

We can still make quite big changes at this stage but only for a few more days.

I have got as far as adding my signature.

There are a few details to sort out on SoM, rudder chains etc and a little more work to be done on the seas.

After much carefully measuring hull dimensions, spars etc I think for this angle of view they are now as accurate as possible.

There is fine tuning, refining to complete, to improve the light and body of the seas, to get minor angles on the lugger more ‘right’ and then details to add however I have got as far as the rigging which so far I don’t fully understand (never sailed a lugger).

One Question: the mizzen rigging, I recall Pete said the boat as posed for this painting with sails was set up as per the day in question however in the photos it appears to me the mizzen rigging is all made fast on the lee side as in portside opposite the prevailing wind and sea.

Is this correct please?

I’d have guessed the rigging would have been made fast to wind ward but not having sailed luggers must ask

TITLE?

I was wondering about a title, any suggestions?
I thought the title should reflect the sorts of key words people searching on line with an interest in this might use, you undoubtedly have good ideas, what do you think please?
Something like ‘Spirit of Mystery, a perfect storm’ sub title ‘ Pete Goss and crew (date from the log) in the Southern Ocean Australia Bound replicating a voyage made in 1850′?

Gentlemen, ladies, your thought please for a title?
