A new painting, the second of 2 studies made on location from the same spot within 2 days. The temperature was a healthy 38 degrees while this picture was being painted. You may want to compare this with the first study Vale of Gaillac 1.
Wine has been made in this valley since at least Roman times. Gaillac wines often come in a distinctively shaped bottle. Some rival the wines of Bordeaux. Historically, being further inland therefore less accessible they have generally been sold for local consumption and on occasion, in the past, to the English by Bordeaux merchants as Bordeaux Claret when their province was short of wine. Today the quality of Gaillac is good, the prices, whilst beginning to rise, as a less well known wine, are still a very good bargain.
