This picture of a very high profile yacht was commissioned by Mitsui-Yamaha (GB), sponsors of the yacht, immediately the race finished. Gordon Frickers had to rush to Southampton to interview the crew and see the yacht, then complete the painting in 4 weeks. He produced 2 and gave them a choice! Of the entire voyage, the crew felt the best and most representational part was the final dash under storm spinnaker, past the Needles and Alum Bay, up the Solent to the finish. The boat was going at her best pace overtaking most of the press launches and they knew they were going to win! The painting was presented to the president of Yamaha (Japan) by Yamaha GB to commemorate their achievement in winning the Whitebread 60 Heineken Trophy (round the world race) - We were told it has been hung in the H.Q. boardroom in Japan.
The picture was also reproduced at the request of Mitsui-Yamaha as a Christmas card.
Yamaha could have chosen any artist. They chose Gordon Frickers.
