It was believed Tectona was, after a long and useful life including as sea experience for students at Plymouth Uni, lost.
This splendid 80 ton ketch "Tectona" was built in Calicut, India in 1929, to a Colin Archer design.
Tectona served as a training vessel with "Moyana" for cadets of the School of Maritime Studies Plymouth, between 1964 and 1980.
Not all Plymouth people and ex Tectona students really forgot her.
Stories circulated as they do.
Tectona, sailing ketch, was reported in many places, many owners and several times as written off, wrecked in the Mediterranean many years ago....
One of the very few places on the Internet she was mentioned was on this web site.
In recent years there as been some discussion on the Net about Tectona, much of it focused around this painting.
That in turn helped a group of interested people to focus on tracking her true course through time and across many seas.
Tectona found!
Tectona is again in British ownership and is scheduled to return to Polruan, Cornwall in May 2008 for a major refit before re commencing work giving sea experience to distressed young people.
Here, Gordon thought it particularly appropriate to use a knife and exploit the viscous qualities' of oil paint to create a loose and tumbling sea of the sort so many of us have often seen around the headlands of South Devon and Cornwall.
The result gives us a more expressive more emotional feel, encouraging the viewers imagination. Painterly, with mystery and character, that is distinct from more "architectural" paintings.
Let me tell you the story about "Tectona, dawn off Bolt Head".
