Formidable in her Mediterranean colour scheme, with a Seafire patrol returning, others parked on deck.
Commissioned by a lady whose husband was on Formidable for 4 years, including in the Med, then went to Canada having decided flying was the future, returning to fly Seafires and to eventually becoming a Naval test pilot. The request was to show a sunset scene, World War 2, Seafires returning from patrol.
Research indicated this meant we were going to paint her either at Sicily or Operation Avalanche (Salerno 9/43)
Landing a Seafire or Spitfire, as photos show and the artist has seen many times at Biggin Hill the final approach was a wobbly business. Because the visibility in a Seafire when landing, nose up, (and taxi ing) was so poor the pilots would weave the aircraft. To assist Pilots, Formidable had a white line painted down the middle of the entire length of her flight deck.
