A solidly built fishing boat at Hooe Lake, Plymouth, vividly painted on location; she lies derelict among the ribs of older craft painted as one of a project (see The boat breakers, Hooe lake for another), a commentary on the state of affairs in West Country fishing.
Numerous solidly built Cornish and Devonian boats were laid up and they are the luck ones. Boats that could have had a life of 50 + years have been chain sawn by order of government. Our men were not even allowed to give beautiful wooden boats to museums or trusts. Fish stocks have been increasingly over fished during the past 50 years. In European waters the British fishing industry has been decimated or worse by cut back quotas and from a lack of support from successive central governments who are perceived to have given away traditional rights in exchange for no benefits for the fishermen
Hooe Lake, formerly a place of busy quays supplying stone for Plymouth breakwater, ex and importing and with a gunpowder mill is now a backwater, home to wildlife and a collection of once noble boats slowly reverting to nature.
Credit where it is due: this series was painted during a cold February; the artist inspired by a new understanding of his very personal colour perception was looking to see how much colour he could find in a seemingly drab subject, what do you think of the result?
