Hailstones as a flood defence?

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Ever had your front door blocked by hailstones? Last night made a fair attempt out side my cottage!

Landscape painting  that is, painting plien aire (out doors)  is currently quite a challenge with temperatures often up to the mid 30’s C in the shade.   Hailstones_IMG_5824_wp.jpg (more…)

Monaco Yacht Show, day 4, more adventures

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Final day of the Monaco Yacht Show, the world’s foremost exhibition for Superyachts. I have a plan of action…

I won’t have time for marine painting, or to look for possible commissions. I’ll not even have much time to take photographs.Masthead_wp.jpg

My new brochure (ask for a copy or down load free from www.frickers.co.uk home page) is being very well received.

I have been amused to have several people say, wow, collector’s item!

Amused because there were a lot of seriously expensive brochures at Monte Carlo!

What surprises are in store today? (more…)

Monaco Yacht Show, the day after…

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

This time I drove to Monaco from Nice, with the Monaco Yacht Show is officially finished parking is much easier.

Great  morning for meeting crews and photographing the yachts but one needs to be organised and quick.  GF_by_A_Nicolle_IMG_1930_b.JPG

I’d loved to have devoted some time to marine painting, oil or watercolours, probably water colours. (more…)

Bang goes the light

Friday, October 9th, 2009

I work with my marine art partly in South West France because the light is reliable and excellent for my unusual colour vision, very few marine painting days are lost to poor light.

Not so lucky with French electrics which I certainly don’t “do”.

I went to turn on the bathroom light and “BANG” ~ no light. Investigation today revealed built in obsolescence!   French_electrics_wp.jpg

Showering by candle light may sound romantic but as yet I’ve not mastered how to hold the candle, it’s not so easy in a shower…

Trafalgar Day – Pickle, advertising agencies, TV, and a marine magazine

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

I can barely keep, up with it!
This is one of those days which reminds me of the debt we owe those who went before us to build our world.
The marine painting “Trafalgar Dawn” still haunts me (available in prints see http://www.frickers.co.uk/marine-art/trafalgar_dawn.html).

I am planning a new piece of marine art, the opposite view.

Today was very 21st century though.

I have had today 3 enquiries about my marine painting which may be of interest and found myself yet again busy with Trafalgar and Admiral Nelson issues.  Pickle__detail_of_signal_2214__Popham__s_code_e.jpg (more…)

Charting a course at the Hydrographic Office

Friday, November 6th, 2009

All days are special,  some more so.

Today I drove to Taunton and had an incredible day at the Admiralty Hydrographic Office research department.

I was looking for period drawings of Botany Bay (Laperouse) and Gibraltar (Nelson)  for 2 marine paintings I am planning and thanks to Guy Hannaford, what a day I had!  (more…)
